नेपालका स्टार लेग स्पिनर सन्दीप लामिछाने बंगलादेश प्रिमियर लिगमा व्यस्त छन् । सन्दीप आबद्ध सिल्हेट सिक्सर्सले ६ खेलमा २ जित मात्र निकालेको छ । शुक्रबार ढाका डाइनामाइट्ससँग ६ विकेटले पराजित भएपछि सिल्हेटको प्ले अफ सम्भावना कमजोर बनेको छ । सन्दीपले ६ खेलमा ४ विकेट हात पार्दै बिपिएलमा आफ्नो प्रभावशाली प्रदर्शन कायम राखेका छन् । सन्दीपले उत्कृष्ट डेब्यु गरे पनि बीचमा दुई खेलमा विकेट लिन सकेनन् । जसका कारण एक खेल नखेलेका उनले पछिल्ला दुई खेलमा पुनः आफ्नो ‘ट्रयाक’ पकड्न सफल भए । उनको सफलतापछि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय क्रिकेट वेभ पोर्टल ‘क्रिजबज’ ले सन्दीपसँग कुराकानी गरेको थियो । उनीसँगको कुराकानीको सारसंक्षेप यस्तो छ :

अस्ट्रेलियामा खेल्न गाह्रो – अस्ट्रेलियामा जानुअघि एसियन र इंग्लिस कन्डिसनमा क्रिकेट खेल्ने अवसर पाएँ । तर, अस्ट्रेलियाको अनुभव बिलकुलै फरक छ । विश्वको चर्चित लिग बिगबासमा खेल्ने मेरो चाहना थियो । यतिवेला मेरो सपना भनौँ वा चाहना त्यो पूरा भयो । एक क्रिकेटरको नाताले धेरै लिग पनि खेलें । अस्ट्रेलियामा चलिरहेको लिग र अन्य मुलुकमा चलिरहेका लिगमा बलिङ गर्नु धेरै फरक छ । अस्ट्रेलियन पिचमा ब्याट्सम्यानले तपार्इंको प्रत्येक बलमा छक्का प्रहार गर्न अग्रसर भइरहेका हुन्छन् । त्यहाँको पिचमा बल मुस्किलले टर्न हुन्छ । तर, एसियन कन्डिसनमा बलिङ गर्नु धेरै सजिलो छ । यहाँका पिचमा सहजै बल टर्निङ हुन्छ ।

बिपिएलसँग पहिले नै सम्झौता – बिगबासमा मेलवर्न स्टार्सबाट प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्नुअघि नै मैले बंगलादेशको बंगलादेश प्रिमियर लिगमा सम्झौता गरिसकेको थिएँ । यो १०–११ महिनाअघिको कुरा थियो । यस सम्बन्धमा मैले बिगबासलाई अगाडि नै जानकारी गराएको थिएँ । यसैकारण म बिगबास छाडी अहिले बिपिएलमा खेलिरहेको हुँ । मैले बिपिएलमा कति दिन खेल्ने भन्ने स्पष्ट पारेको छु । ढाकामा खेल्न पाउनुको पछाडि सिल्हेट सिक्सर्सका कार्यकारी प्रमुख यासिर आबैदले धेरै सहयोग गर्नुभएको छ । उनकै कारण आज म बिपिएलको एक हिस्सा बन्न पाएँ । यतिवेला मेरो दिमागमा केबल बिपिएल मात्र छ । बिगबास अहिले मेरो मनमा छैन ।

क्लार्कको पत्र देख्दा ‘सक’ – अस्ट्रेलियन विश्व च्याम्पियन कप्तान माइकल क्लार्कसँग मेरो पहिलो भेट हङकङ टी–२० ब्लिजमा भएको थियो । हङकङमै रहेका क्लार्कले नेपालबाट आएका एक फुच्चे केटोको निकै राम्रो छ भन्ने सुनेका रहेछन् । उससँग केही पनि छैन तर निकै रामो खेल्छ भन्ने उनलाई बताइएको थियो । सम्भवतः क्लार्क टी–२० ब्लिजमा मेरो प्रदर्शनबाट प्रभावित भएको हुनुपर्छ । त्यसैकारण उनले मलाई अस्ट्रेलिया खेल्न र प्रशिक्षण गर्न बोलाउनुभयो । एक सामान्य नेपाली केटो जोसँग न त स्पोनसरसिप नै थियो न कि पैसा नै । तर, क्लार्कले अस्ट्रेलिया भ्रमणको सबै जिम्मेवारी लिनुभयो । अस्ट्रेलियामा खेल्नु मेरो सपना पनि थियो । त्यसभन्दा पनि क्लार्कले मलाई अस्ट्रेलियामा आउन पठाएको पत्र देख्दा म स्तब्ध ‘सक’ भएँ । यो सत्य कुरा हो । ‘मलाई माइकल क्लार्कले खेल्न बोलाएको रहेछ ?’ पत्र हेर्दै यो शब्द निस्किएको थियो ।

आइपिएलमा नेपालको नाम – इन्डियन प्रिमियर लिग (आइपिएल) जस्तो प्लेटफर्ममा अवसर पाउनु चानचुने होइन । यहाँ धेरैले खेल्ने सपना देखेका छन् । कमैका मात्र आइपिएल खेल्ने सपना पूरा हुन्छन् । एक नेपाली र क्रिकेटरका नाताले म आफूलाई भाग्यमानी ठान्छु । किनभने, मैले सानो उमेरमा नै आइपिएलमा खेल्ने अवसर पाएँ । आइपिएलअघि मैले कुनै पनि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय फ्रेन्चाइज बेसमा हुने टी–२० लिग खेलेको थिइनँ । त्यो नै मेरो पहिलो अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय टी–२० लिग थियो । त्यहाँ मैले नेपालको नाम राख्न सफल भएँ । अन्तिम तीन खेलमा मौका पाएँ । त्यो मौकालाई खेर फाल्न दिइनँ । यसपटक दिल्ली क्यापिटलले राम्रो टिम बनाएको छ । पुनः एकपटक दिल्लीसँग सम्झौता गर्न पाउँदा म ज्यादै खुसी छु । आइपिएलको रमाइलो पक्ष भनेको म नियमित रूपमा दिल्लीका प्रशिक्षक रिकी पोन्टिङसँग ‘टच’ मा रहिरहें । फेरि म एक भोकाएको क्रिकेटर हुँ । जो बलर दैनिक केही न केही सिक्न चाहन्थेँ । मैले पूरै सिजनमा प्रशिक्षक पोन्टिङसँग विभिन्न पक्षमा सुझाब लिएँ ।

समयअनुसार खेल ढाँचा – सम्भतः रसिद खानले अहिलेको जेनेरेसनलाई प्रभाव पार्नुभएको छ । यसलाई कसैले पनि नकार्न सकिन्न । वर्तमान समयमा उहाँले स्पिन बलिङमा धेरै प्रभाव पार्नुभएको छ । तर, मेरो व्यक्तिगत धारणा मान्ने हो भने पहिला र अहिले क्रिकेट खेल्ने शैली पनि परिवर्तन भएको देख्छु । सन् २००३ र २०१९ को जेनेरेसनका क्रिकेटर नै फरक छन् । त्यसवेला थोरै ब्याट्सम्यानले मात्र स्विप सर्ट प्रहार गर्न सक्थे । त्यसैकारण त्यो जमानामा एक स्पिन बलरले बललाई चारैतिर बल फ्याक्न सके । अहिले त्यस्तो छैन । वर्तमान समयमा त सबै ब्याट्सम्यान खाली स्विप प्रहार गर्न मात्र खोज्छन् । यसैकारण सन् २०१९ को जेनेरेसनमा चाहे त्यो फास्ट वा स्पिनर नै नहोस्, उसले प्रत्येक बल फ्याँक्दा धेरै मिहिनेत गर्नुपर्छ । यी पक्ष बाबजुत रसिद खानले लेग स्पिनमा एक किसिमको परिवर्तन नै ल्याउनुभयो ।

बलिङमा भेराइटिज – सुरुका दिनमा मैले मध्यम र ढिलो बलिङ गरेको थिएँ । अहिले मेरो बलिङ शैलीमा परिवर्तन आएको छ । यदि, तपाईंले मैले दुई वर्षअघि र अहिले बलिङ गरेको भिडियो हेर्नुभयो भने त्यसमा परिवर्तन भएको देख्न सक्नुहुन्छ । मेरो बलिङको विशेषता भनेको प्रत्येक बल फरक किसिमले फ्याँक्न सक्छु । आवश्यकताअनुसार म कहिले स्पिड बल गर्छु भने कहिलेकाहीँ स्लो बल फ्क्याँक्छु । र, बलिङ गर्दा विपक्षी ब्याट्सम्यान कुन रूपमा प्रस्तुत भइरहेका छन्, त्यसअनुसार पनि बलिङ गर्नुपर्छ । ब्याट्सम्यानलाई दबाबमा राख्ने हो भने हामीले सही लाइनमा बलिङ गर्नुपर्छ । एक बलरले सही लाइनमा बल फ्याँक्दा फाइदा नै हुन्छ ।

ब्याट्सम्यानलाई आउट पार्न लेग स्पिन – सुरुका दिन मैले दाजुभाइ र साथीहरूसँगै क्रिकेट खेलेँ । त्यसवेला मध्यमगति र अफस्पिन बलिङ गरेँ । हाम्रो लक्ष्य नै जसरी पनि ब्याट्सम्यानलाई आउट पार्ने हो । जसो जसो बलिङ गर्न आउँथ्यो, त्यसो त्यसो गरी नै बलिङ गरेँ । तर, ब्याट्सम्यानलाई आउट पार्न निकै मुस्किल पथ्र्यो । यसैकारण मैले ब्याट्सम्यनलाई कसरी छिटो आउट पार्न सकिन्छ भनी सोच्न थालेँ । फलस्वरूप मैले लेग स्पिन सुरु गरेँ । लेग स्पिन बलिङ नीति अपनाए पनि सहजै ब्याट्सम्यान आउट हुन थाले । सानो छँदा घरमा टिभी थिएन । कहिलेकाहीँ रेडियो कमेन्ट्री सुन्थेँ । पछि घरमा टेलिभिजन आयो । अनि मात्र मैले अस्ट्रेलियन महान् बलर सेन वार्नको बलिङ गरेको शैली हेर्न पाएँ । बिस्तारै वार्नले बलिङ गरेको शैली पछ्याउँदै गएँ । नयाँ पत्रिकामा खबर छ ।

घरेलु क्रिकेट सुधार्नुपर्छ – यो दुर्भाग्य नै भन्नुपर्छ । मैले अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय लेबलमा क्रिकेट खेल्न थालेदेखि नै नेपालमा क्रिकेट संघ प्रतिबन्धमा छ । आइसिसीले नेपाल क्रिकेट संघलाई किन प्रतिबन्ध ग-यो त्यसवेला मलाई त्यति धेरै जानकारी छैन । जबसम्म घरेलु क्रिकेटको विकास हुन सक्दैन, नेपालको क्रिकेट पनि माथि उठ्न सक्दैन । घरेलु क्रिकेट मजबुत बनाउन संघ नै चाहिन्छ । हामीले आशा गर्नुपर्छ, नेपालमा भइरहेका समस्या अब छिट्टै समाधान हुनेछ । यसबीच नेपालमा विभिन्न टी–२० लिग हुने गरेका छन् । यसैबाट हामीको क्रिकेट धानेको छ ।

१४, मंसिर, चितवन । मंसिर २२ गतेदेखि सुरु हुने एभरेष्ट प्रिमियर लिग (ईपीएल) क्रिकेट प्रतियोगिताका लागि चितवन टाइगर्सले इंग्ल्यान्डका अलराउण्डर जर्ज स्कटलाई अनुबन्धित गरेको छ ।

इंग्ल्यान्डमा मिडलसेक्सबाट काउन्टी क्रिकेट खेलिरहेका २३ वर्षीय स्कटलाई चितवन टाइगर्सले अन्तिम विदेशी खेलाडीको रुपमा आफ्नो टिममा भित्र्याएको हो । उनी दायाँ हाते व्याट्सम्यान र दायाँ हाते तीब्र गतिका बलर हुन् । जर्ज स्कटसँग पाँच वटा फर्स्ट क्लास, दुई लिस्ट ‘ए’ र १५ टी–ट्वान्टी क्रिकेट खेलेको अनुभव छ ।

अन्तिम विदेशी खेलाडीको रुपमा स्कटलाई अनुबन्धन गरिएसँगै आफ्नो टिम मजबुत र सन्तुलित भएको चितवनका मालिक किशोर भट्टराईले बताएका छन् । युवा खेलाडीहरुले भरिएको चितवनले यस पटकको ईपीएलमा राम्रो प्रदर्शन गर्दै उपाधि जित्ने लक्ष्य राखेको छ ।

एभरेष्ट प्रिमियर लिग (ईपीएल) क्रिकेट प्रतियोगिताको टिम चितवनले ट्यालेन्ट हन्टबाट पाँच जना खेलाडी छनोट गरेको छ ।

यसरी छनोट हुने खेलाडीमा आकाश थापा, गौतम केसी, अभिनास बस्याल, प्रशान्त महत र संघर्ष पौडेल रहेका छन् । छनौट भएका पाँचै जना खेलाडीलाई क्लोज क्याम्पमा राखी अन्तिम नाम प्रकाशन गरिने चितवनले बताएको छ ।

नारायणगढस्थित क्याम्पा चौरमा बुधबार चितवन क्रिकेट संघको सहकार्यमा भएको ट्यालेण्ट हण्टमा ४६ जना युवा खेलाडीको सहभागिता रहेको थियो । ट्यालेण्ट हण्टमा जिल्लाका विभिन्न ठाउँबाट १३ वर्षदेखि माथिका खेलाडीलाई सहभागिता गराएको थियो ।

Paras Khadka: Nepali cricket’s key ‘architect’ has a vision for future

Growing up in Baneshwor, Paras Khadka never thought he would be a cricketer. Even though he played the sport from an early age, ‘architect’ was the the identity that he embraced for his future, during his early life.

Now Khadka turned a failure in his childhood dream. However, his contribution to the development of Nepali cricket is not less than that of an architect to a beutiful building. The national team’s captain for past nine years, Khadka still wants to contribute more to the sector.

A Cricketer ‘By Accident’

“I was good in studies and always felt that I would make a name for myself with the help of academics. If I look back, I feel I became a cricketer by accident,” shares Khadka.

Khadka’s cricket career took off when his school, South Point Boarding High School, participated in KB Khatri Memorial Cup. “The tournament was taking place at the TU Ground in Kirtipur, the place I had always dreamt of playing,” he adds.

Khadka then led his school to glory and was one of the standout players during the tournament. That put him in the eye of the selectors and was picked for Nepal’s U-15 team. He did not know that the national team selectors were also present at the match.

Khadka then carried on playing for other age groups and was also part of the team that won the U-19 Plate Championship in 2006. “That was an amazing tournament, not just because we won, but because we beat two test playing nations, South Africa and New Zealand.”

Winning that title gave Khadka confidence to do well in cricket. “I always doubted if cricket had a future in Nepal, which is why I always wanted to go to cricketing nations like Australia or England where I could study and play cricket simultaneously.”

‘Visa Rejection Meant Captaincy’

When then coach Roy Dias told him he was in line to become the captain, Khadka told him that he wanted to go abroad to peruse his studies, but when his visa to Australia got rejected he decided to give cricket a go.

“If I look back, I’m thankful that my visa got rejected after which I thought why not carry on playing cricket,” adds the skipper.

He shares that things started to get serious when was made captain in 2009. “It was only after that I started thinking about a future in cricket. Things were getting serious which is why I then started to push myself. I knew I could get better and even though we were in Division 5, I knew we could go a long way.”

क्रिकेट खेलाडी ललित भण्डारी सम्मानित

२८ कात्तिक, कञ्चनपुर । राष्ट्रिय क्रिकेट खेलाडी ललितबहादुर भण्डारीलाई कञ्चनपुरको शुक्लाफाँटा नगरपालिकाले बुधबार सम्मान गरेको छ ।

नगरपालिकाका नगरप्रमुख दिलबहादुर ऐरले एक लाख एक हजार १११ रुपैयाँ र सम्मानपत्रसहित खेलाडी भण्डारीलाई सम्मान गरेका हुन् । खेलका माध्यमबाट नगरपालिकाको नाम उच्च राख्ने कार्य गरेकाले खेलाडी भण्डारीलाई सम्मान गरेका छौँ । नगरप्रमुख ऐरले भने, ‘प्रतिभावान् खेलाडीको मनोबल उच्च राख्नका लागि यस्ता कार्यक्रमले सघाउ पुर्‍याउँछ ।’

खेलाडी भण्डारीले सम्मान हुन पाउँदा निकै खुशी भएको बताए । खेल मैदान बनाएर प्रतिभावान् युवालाई खेलप्रतिको आकर्षण बढाउन सकिने उनले बताए ।

कैलालीको धनगढीमा आयोजना गरिएको डिपिएल दुईमा क्रिकेट खेलाडी भण्डारी मोस्ट भ्यालुएबल प्लेयर घोषित भई गोल्डन बुट जितेका थिए । भण्डारीले सन् २०१७ देखि राष्ट्रिय क्रिकेट टोलीमा सहभागी भई क्रिकेट खेल्दै आएका छन् ।

२८ कात्तिक, काठमाडौं । इंग्ल्याण्डमा महिला सुपर लिगको एक खेलमा बल कसले चलाउने भन्ने निर्णय लिन रेफ्री डेभिड म्याकनामाराले ‘रक, पेपर, सिजर’ खेलाएर निर्णय लिँदा निलम्बित हुनु परेको छ ।

म्यानचेस्टर सिटी र रिडिङबीचको खेलमा बल कसले चलाउने भन्ने निर्णय लिन म्याकनामाराले ‘रक, पेपर, सिजर’ खेलाएका थिए । खेल सुरु हुनुअघि बल चलाउने निर्णय गर्न सिक्का टस गर्नुपर्नेमा सिक्का ल्याउन बिर्सिएकाले उनले त्यस्तो खेलबाट निर्णय लिएको बताएका छन् ।

फुटबल एशोसिएशनले खेलको मर्म विपरीत काम गरेकाले उनलाई तीन हप्ता निलम्बन गरिएको जनाएको छ । फुटबल सुरु गर्न सिक्का नै टस गर्नुपर्ने नियम रहेको एशोसिएशनले जनाएको छ ।

Pokhara counts on its majestic ground to give cricket a boost

The new andmajestic cricket ground hosting the ongoing Pokhara Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament in Pokhara has the potential to change the landscape of not only Nepali cricket but also the international cricket, particularly in South Asia.

Located just over five kilometres away from the city’s prominent tourist hub--the lakeside, the lush green turf overlooking the scenic Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains have recently set social media abuzz. From star players and cricketing officials to the crazy fans, many have posed for photographs from the ground with the majestic mountain ranges in the backdrop.

Although the venue may not meet the standards of hosting international events now, Pokhara’s cricket pitch has all the ingredients to make it a spectacular sporting hub in the future. The organisers had to do with makeshift parapet while players’ dugout and media centre are housed under tents. Since the pitch itself was only ready to host the matches just before the tournament began last week, the venue has no permanent facility built on concrete structure.

The majority of the city denizens, however, are cut off from the sporting buzz. Locals and the tourists, captivated by the smell of inter-continental cuisines and live music events, appear least interested in the game that could potentially redefine Pokhara--as cricket hub of the region.

To sustain cricket in a city obsessed with football and volleyball, Pokhara Premier League (PPL) has a long way to go—especially if it is to align its popularity with that of the two other cricket leagues. Rijan Prajoo, an assistant coach with Pokhara Paltan, believes this could just be a start. “PPL obviously is a big draw among the local sport fans who are eager to have a closer look at star players, Nepal’s national team skipper Paras Khadka and Sandeep Lamichhane,” said Prajoo. “It is an encouraging start because this is the first time I have seen such a large crowd at a domestic tournament.”

Pokhara does host some cricket tournaments, but those events have not been able to attract many cricket fans to the ground. Even those who turned up to watch matches in the past were the ones closely connected to the game or the players.

The organisers have made the entrance to the games free in order to encourage fans to watch matches live from the ground. The plan has worked wonders, as around 4,000 spectators on average have been watching the matches at the ground.

Chhumbi Lama, managing director of Queen’s Event Management Pvt Ltd, the PPL organisers, admitted that pulling in spectators was quite a task. “The pitches, lush green outfield and level of competition have so far been fantastic. To attract more fans to the ground is always a challenge.”

His team’s tireless effort has paid off. His team is encouraged by the presence of a large crowd during weekends.

“We need to make sure we upgrade the quality of the competition and facilities. Local authorities are positive in giving this ground a definite shape, and if everything pans out well, cricket could be one of the main assets of Pokhara,” Lama said.

For Prajoo, the premier league is about motivating youngsters to take up the game. “This is the best thing that has happened here,” he said. “Watching their idols play here will definitely fuel more interest and enthusiasm in these kids and eventually raise the popularity of the game.”

नेपाली राष्ट्रिय क्रिकेट टोलीका युवा लेग स्पिनर सन्दीप लामिछाने अस्ट्रेलियामा हुने बिग ब्यास क्रिकेटका लागि मेलबोर्न स्टार्ससँग आबद्ध भएका छन्।

भारतमा यसै वर्ष भएको आइपिएलमा दिल्लीबाट खेल्दै सनसनी मच्चाएका उनी एसोसिएट राष्ट्रबाट बिग ब्यास खेल्ने पहिलो खेलाडी हुनेछन्।

दिल्लीमा सनसनीपूर्ण डेब्यू गर्दै ३ खेलमा ५ विकेट लिँदै व्यवसायिक क्रिकेट थालेका सन्दीपले त्यसपछि ग्लोबल टी २० क्यानाडा लिगमा मोन्ट्रियल टाइगर्सबाट खेलेका थिए।

त्यसपछि क्यारेवियन प्रिमियर लिगजस्ता विश्वचर्चित लिगमा खेलिसकेका उनले अफगानिस्तान प्रिमियर लिग, बंगालदेश प्रिमियर लिग र युनाइटेड अरब इमिरेट्समा आयोजना हुने टी-१० मा पनि अनुबन्ध भईसकेका छन्।

यसअघि पनि अस्ट्रेलियन भूमीमा अनुभव बटुलिसकेका उनले माइकल क्लार्कको क्लब वेष्ट्रन सवर्वस् डिस्ट्रिक क्लवबाट २०१६–१७ को सिजनको प्रिमियर ग्रेड क्रिकेट लिग खेलेका थिए। सन्दीपले क्लार्कको एकेडेमीमा समेत प्रशिक्षण गरेका थिए।

उनीसँगै अफगानिस्तानका मुजीब उर रहमानले पनि बिग ब्यासमा मौका पाएका छन्। उनलाई गत साता मात्र ब्रिसबेन हर्ट्सले आबद्ध गरेको थियो।

यसै वर्षको नोभेम्बर १६ देखि डिसेम्बर १६ सम्म हुने दक्षिण अफ्रीकाको टि-२० लिगको ड्राफ्टबाट नाम फिर्ता लिएका सन्दीपका लागि दिल्लीमा सनसनीपूर्ण डेब्यू गर्दै ३ खेलमा ५ विकेट लिँदै व्यवसायिक क्रिकेट थालेका सन्दीपले त्यसपछि ग्लोबल टी २० क्यानाडा लिगमा मोन्ट्रियल टाइगर्सबाट खेलेका थिए।

यसै वर्षको नोभेम्बर १६ देखि डिसेम्बर १६ सम्म हुने दक्षिण अफ्रीकाको टि-२० लिगको ड्राफ्टबाट नाम फिर्ता लिएका सन्दीपका लागि क्रिकेटमा यो अर्को फड्को हो।

क्रिकेट वेबसाइट क्रिकइन्फोको अनुसार सन्दीप डिसेम्बर १९ बाट सुरू हुने बिग बास लिगका लागि डिसेम्बर १० मा मेलबोर्न स्टार्सटिममा सामेल हुनेछन्।

यो सिजनमा निकै व्यस्त बनेका १८ वर्षिय सन्दीप यसै साता पोखरामा आयोजना हुने पोखरा प्रिमियर लिगमा विराटनगरको मार्की खेलाडीसमेत हुन्।

उनी बिग बास लिग चलिरहँदै बंगलादेश प्रिमियर लिग खेल्न बंगलादेश जानेछन्।

बंगलादेश प्रिमियर लिग जनवरी ५ देखि फेब्रुअरी ८ सम्म हुनेछ। बंगलादेशमा सन्दीपले सिल्हेट सिक्सरबाट खेल्नेछन्।

पछिल्लो तीन सिजनमध्ये दुईमा केन प्रिमियर लिगका सर्वाधिक गोलकर्ता हुन् । साथै रुस विश्वकपमा उनले गोल्डेन बुटसमेत जिते । पछिल्लोपटक हडर्सफिल्डविरुद्ध दुई गोल गरेपछि टोटनहृयामका लागि उनको गोलसंख्या १४५ पुगेको छ ।

तर, उनी मेस्सीभन्दा कोसौं टाढा छन् । मेस्सीले बार्सिलोनाका लागि ६४६ खेलमा ५६० गोल गरिसकेका छन् । च्याम्पियन्स लिगमै पनि उनको गोल संख्या १०३ छ । ‘जब एकै सिजनमा ५०/६० गोल गरे, त्यसबेला नै मेस्सी र रोनाल्डो सामान्य भन्दा माथि गए’ इंग्ल्याण्डका कप्तान समेत रहेका केनले भने ।

Nepal through to semis as group winners

Nepal advanced into the semi-finals as Group ‘A’ winners of the Saff Championship football tournament following a 2-0 victory over hosts Bangladesh at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.

Goals in either half from strikers Bimal Gharti Magar and substitute Nawayug Shrestha sealed the victory for Nepal who made entered the semi-finals of the tournament after five years. Yet to lift the championship, it is Nepal’s fifth semi-final entry in the biggest football tournament of the South Asian region. Earlier, Nepal had made it to the last four during the 1995 (Colombo), 1999 (Goa), 2011 (New Delhi) and 2013 (Kathmandu) editions.

Nepal had gone down 2-1 against Pakistan in their opening match on Tuesday and defeated Bhutan 4-0 on Thursday. Bangladesh had defeated Bhutan 2-0 and Pakistan 1-0. In the other match of the group, Pakistan defeated Bhutan 3-0. Nepal’s semi-final opponent will be finalised on Sunday – one among India or Maldives — after the two teams play in their last group match.

Saturday’s outcome meant Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan finished with six points each in the group and Bhutan crashed out without registering a point in the table. Nepal topped the table on the basis of number of goals scored between the teams concerned having scored three goals followed by two goals of Pakistan. Bangladesh had only one goal to their name in terms of the team concerned.

Nepal and Bangladesh went into the final group match with both in a contrasting circumstances. While it was a must-win situation for Nepal, a draw would have been sufficient for Bangladesh. It was Bimal Gharti Magar who made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute through a freekick. Bangladeshi goalie Md Sahidul Alam fumbled Bimal’s free kick allowing the Nepali striker to net his eighth international goal. The 20-year old is now five goals sigh of all time highest goal scorer from Nepal to match the record held by former skipper Hari Khadka.

“More than the personal achievement, it is the entry into the semi-finals that carries more significance for me. But I am still happy with my individual performance,” said Gharti Magar, a product of ANFA Academy. “We are inching closer to trophy and everyone in the team is gaining confidence.”

Though Bangladesh dominated the ball possession before Nepal struck, the hosts were under intense pressure to equalise and resorted to an all-attack game but ultimately ended up losing the tempo of the game. A stubborn Nepali defense line up kept Bangladeshi attacks on bay in a match where both sides failed to make other remarkable attacks.

Forward Bharat Khawas, the stand-in-skipper for Biraj Maharjan who was rested for the match, tested Bangladeshi goalie Alam in the 54th minute. Khawas forced the custodian for a diving save and Sunil Bal shot wayward in the rebounder after being set by Rohit Chand. Bangladesh’s only remarkable move of the match came in the 70th minute when Hossain Roney headed above the bar from the area.

Nawayug came as replacement for Khawas in the 66th minute and ensured victory with a perfect finish in the 90th minute. He converted Bishal Rai’s through pass with a cool finish sending the ball beyond goalie after his shot got a deflection off the upright.

Nepal’s coach Kiran Shrestha, the deputy to head coach Bal Gopal Maharjan, believed the first goal was the turning point of the match. “We played as per the match plan and the first goal turned the game towards us,” said Shrestha.
