71 cabbies detained for overcharging passengers in Valley

KATHMANDU: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has taken under control 71 taxi drivers for action as they were found overcharging passengers in the valley.
They were arrested under a special campaign the Division launched on Thursday. They were arrested for refusing to take passengers to their designated destinations, overcharging more than the fare determined by the state, refusing to charge fare as per the taxi metre and for tampering the metres, Chief of the MTPD, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Kumar Panta, said.
He said that the special drive was conducted following the complaints received by the MTPD of overcharging passengers and harassing them.
SSP Panta told Rastriya Samachar Samiti that the police would conduct such campaigns regularly. According to him, 80 traffic police personnel have been mobilised for this purpose.
There are 10,645 taxis operating in Kathmandu valley at present.
